Eleonora de Toledo burial gown, 1562
I can’t get this dress out of my head. One reason is that it is creepy and gross, having been salvaged from a grave. The other is the epic conservation work here. The lightest parts of the ‘dress’ that you see are actually supporting fabric used in the reconstruction; the main body fabric of the dress did not survive as well as the lace did.
And who was Elenora De Toledo? She was a mid 16th century Italian Dutchess- married to a Medici. She died of malaria at the age of 40, and was hastily buried (her bodice was not fully laced up the sides.) Her grave was exhumed in 1857- nearly 300 years after her death- and the dress was recovered, along with a pair of stockings and a velvet underbodice, both in remarkable condition compared with the dress.
